The week in the domestic league

The results, the table movement and the clubs whose run of form has changed the top half.

The week in the domestic league. The short version: the numbers matter, but only once you know what each one is actually counting.

Start with what is being measured

A statistic answers a narrow question. Possession counts passes, not chances. Shots count attempts, not quality. Read them together and they describe a match; read one alone and it will mislead you.

Then look at the sample

Three matches is a mood. Ten is a trend. A season is a fact. Most arguments about form are really arguments about how many games someone is willing to count.

And check what changed

A club that has changed manager, formation or first-choice goalkeeper is not the same club it was a month ago, and its earlier numbers describe a team that no longer exists.
