The transfer window, explained

What a fee actually covers, why a deal collapses on medical grounds, and what deadline day really decides.

The transfer window, explained. The short version: the numbers matter, but only once you know what each one is actually counting.

Start with what is being measured

A statistic answers a narrow question. Possession counts passes, not chances. Shots count attempts, not quality. Read them together and they describe a match; read one alone and it will mislead you.

Then look at the sample

Three matches is a mood. Ten is a trend. A season is a fact. Most arguments about form are really arguments about how many games someone is willing to count.

And check what changed

A club that has changed manager, formation or first-choice goalkeeper is not the same club it was a month ago, and its earlier numbers describe a team that no longer exists.
